Happy Gagaween: Creating a Lady GaGa Halloween Costume

Halloween is a big deal for me, I love dressing up and it's a night to let the 'freak' out.

When I saw Lady GaGa's 'Born This Way' video I knew instantly what my costume was going to be for 2011 - GaGa Skeleton. A perfect blend of scary and chic.

Lady GaGa in Born This Way

To create this outfit you will need:
  • Black bow tie
  • White shirt
  • Black suit - trousers and jacket
  • Pink wig
  • White and black face paint
  • Black eye liner - don't forget the sharpener
  • A range of make up brushes - including lip liner, thin, thick etc
To help me with the make up I used two tutorials from YouTube as inspiration, both are excellent and really helped me recreate the skeleton make up.

It's easier to paint your face white first then draw out the hollow black details and shade in.

Here are some close up shots of the make up and the costume combined.

Lady GaGa stands for freedom of expresion and being exactly who you are. I absolutely loved dressing up as her for Halloween, it was so liberating and fun, roll on 2012.

How to make a Lady GaGa disco bra: A step-by-step guide

Ever since I saw Lady GaGa cavorting on an inflatable animal in a paddling pool in her debut video for 'Just Dance' not only did I develop a HUGE girl crush but wanted/needed her disco bra.

What, may you ask is a disco bra? It's a bra with mirrored disco ball attached on the cups and looks friggin' awesome as the GaGa demonstrates below.

So, how did I make it?

1. Bra selection - you need a black bra, don't bother with another colour and make sure it has straps and is pretty sturdy as after you attach the pieces it gets pretty heavy (you don't want boobs-ahoy). I chose a multi-way bra with detachable straps.

2. Mirrored pieces - these I found pretty easily on eBay, it seems if you live in America you can get buy them from online shops but being a UK girl I found a UK based seller on Ebay - type in mirrored disco ball pieces and they were around £5.00 for 200 pieces and I ended up using close to 400 pieces which I suppose depends on piece sizes and size of bra (mine is a 36C).

3. Super glue -I used a normal shop bought super glue and applied a blob of glue to the tile and then used a cotton bud to spread it over the the whole tile - beware I glued pretty much all of my fingers and nails, it's a tricky process!

The stages of disco bra

Voila - la disco bra!

Finally owning a disco bra is life changing. I have been wanting to make one since 2008 and if I were Prime Minister I would make it law that everyone possess one.

Lady GaGa and her disco bra have made a massive impact on my life and have even influenced my Twitter name - @discobra so please follow me if you like GaGa, food, film and angry rants!

New lady crush: Rihanna

The list grows....

I have an admiration for strong, talented and creative ladies and so my 'lady crush' list contains Lady GaGa, Ellie Goulding, Marina and the Diamonds and Grace Coddington (American Vogue Creative Director). These women are incredibly beautiful, fearless and have an abundance of (IMO) genius. So after watching Rihanna perform on the X Factor Final I just thought WOW.

The duet between her and Matt Cardle (glad he lost the hat) was brilliant, the best out of the four by far and probably cemented Matt as the winner. Rihanna sounded great (bit nasal, but I'm embracing it) and looked phenomenal.... at first I thought the dress was boring until you see the split - Wowzers! No wonder Matt had to bite his fingers.

It's taken me a while to warm to RiRi, when she first came out with 'Pon de Replay' I wasn't exactly overwhelmed but she's been clever over the years to reinvent herself and she seems more comfortable in her own skin than ever before.

Musically, is she breaking new ground? Um, not really, but her songs are extremely relevant, catchy and she clearly loves performing them. 'Russian Roulette' was a bold move for her, but I think she had to do that to get where she is today, change direction, work with new producers, try out a new image and it's worked in RiRi's favour.

There's not much point on harping on about her past, yes she's suffered domestic abuse but she has bounced back and is looking strong, confident and empowered. I'm loving the softer, girlier image change too - less leather and studs, more flowers and knickers!

Rihanna, you've made the list.

Love, SGS xoxo.

GaGa + Glee = Ecstatic Me

There have been some fabulous combinations in recent years...

Ant + Dec, Reggae Reggae sauce + Subway, Kenan + Kel, Milli + Vanilli and Kate Moss + Topshop.

However, there is something so special about the next combination because if there is only one thing I love more than Glee and Lady GaGa it's Glee and Lady GaGa together.

On May 24th the Glee cast pay homage to the Queen of Pop and Avante -Garde (sod off Britney) Lady Gaga, 9pm on E4.

This union is extra special for me because I do LOVE them both. Glee is a ray of sunshine on an otherwise glum and painful Monday night and well GaGa... she inspired to me to go blonder and have a fringe you know.

The recent Madonna episode of Glee was genius, the production on Glee is always top notch but they took it too a whole new level for this episode. The songs, choreography and storyline was superb and Sue Sylvester's portrayal as Madonna in a shot for shot copy of 'Vogue' will hold a special place in my heart for a long time.

I have high hopes for the GaGa episode, and although there are already videos and the songs are climbing the iTunes chart at a terrific pace... I am waiting for it cold turkey, no videos or clips. I will not substitute for the real stuff, the sweet, sweet injection of pure Glee + GaGa directly into my corneas and eardrums on Monday night.... Arghhh I need a fix.

Not watched Glee before? Think it's stupid? Well, why not watch Monday's and tell me you didn't enjoy the production of at least one of the songs... you'll be a Gleek and a Little Monster in no time.

Ra ra ra ah ah - Ro ma Ro ma mah - Ga Ga Oooh la la - Want your Bad Romance*

Love, SGS xoxo

* For those that think I might have a had a stroke and fallen on the keyboard, it's actually Bad Romance by Lady GaGa - get with it!

Cardiff goes GaGa for one night only

Lady GaGa, she came, had 10 costume changes, sung her lungs out and felt up her dancers... amazing

Cardiff transformed into a sea of glitter, lace and platinum blonde wigs as Lady GaGa rolled into the city on March 3rd to take to the stage at CIA for her sold out The Monster Ball Tour.

So what did I expect?

I certainly expected a mountain of costume changes, fake blood, a monstrous sea creature and GaGa on top singing and dancing form and the lady didn't dissapoint.

GaGa kicked off the show in a purple leotard and belted out 'Dance in the dark' from The Fame Monster album and from there began a relentless almost 2 hours of narrative, singing, dancing, sea monsters and slightly odd annecdotes.

Highlights for me included just GaGa and a piano as she sang a beautiful rendition of 'Speechless' and 'Brown Eyes', it's then you truly appreaciate the fact she can really sing. Her vocals are impeccible and what Madonna and Britney have to make up for with huge stage production, GaGa can obliterate with her voice.

For true GaGa fans the concert is a blend of pure pop/art pleasure and hits like 'Just Dance', 'Paparazzi' and 'Pokerface' were the ultimate crowd pleasers. Before you could say 'I'm a free bitch baby' GaGa had finally found the Monster Ball, set her friends free and ended with a spectacular version of 'Bad Romance'.

What charmed me the most about Lady GaGa was her sincerity, she seemed genuinely awed that the venue was packed out and happy to be able to perform for her fans.

So I may have packed the falsh eyelashes and lace gloves away, but I will always be her Little Monster.

Love, SGS xoxo
